Harmful algal blooms
Harmful algal blooms (HABs)
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are caused when a type of aquatic bacteria called cyanobacteria multiply quickly to form visible colonies of millions of cells. HABs are also known as blue-green algae. Cyanobacteria grow in lakes, ponds, and other water sources. Like any bacteria, they reproduce best in combinations of warm temperatures, sunlight, and nutrient-rich water sources. With these combinations, the bacteria can burst and reproduce rapidly, filling lakes, ponds and ditches with cloudy bluish-green growth known as a harmful algal bloom (HAB). HABs can be toxic if swallowed in large amounts. Pets and other animals may become very sick or die if they come into contact with a HAB. Learn more from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.
