C. diff
Clostridioides difficile (C. diff)
Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) is a germ that causes diarrhea and inflammation of the colon (colitis). C. diff is estimated to cause almost half a million infections in the U.S. each year. C. diff can infect anyone, but is more common in people who:
- are 65 and older
- recently stayed in a hospital or nursing home
- have a weakened immune system
- are taking or have recently finished taking antibiotics
